The Verdict: Complicated
From The Tasting Notes –
This is a strong drink with a lot of flavors happening at once. Not very smooth, more of a burn going down. The gin provides good aroma but you can’t taste it much. The bitters and anisette come through strongly at the finish. Not bad overall.
A Silver King sounds particularly good, though I’m not much for gin. Love cocktail Fridays! (I can dream!)
Maybe Mr. RetroRuth would have enjoyed it more if he’d dressed in black tie, like on the Calvert Party Ency. cover 🙂
I wonder why it’s called Turf. Did the book give an explanation?
Add brine and it becomes a Surf ‘n’ Turf?

It is indeed classy.
While looking up the source of the name (gentlemens’ clubs devoted to gambling on horses are frequently named “Turf Club”), I discovered that lots of the original recipes used absinthe, not anisette! Since absinthe was illegal here when the book was published, it must have been fun finding an adequate substitute.
Oh man! That makes so much more sense than anisette! We might have to re-try this based on your research. Thanks! 🙂
