From 500 Tasty Sandwiches, 1941

Frosted Sandwich Loaf
1 unsliced loaf of sandwich bread
Butter
Mayonnaise
Sliced tomatoes
Lettuce
9 ounces cream cheese
Milk
Parsley
Pickle Filling
¼ cup butter
4 sweet pickles
6 sprigs parsley
Bacon Filling
7 slices crisp bacon
1 pimiento
¼ cup mayonnaise
Egg Salad
2 hard-cooked eggs
1 tbsp chopped pickles
1 tsp chili sauce
6 small stuffed olives
2 tbsp mayonnaise
1Remove all crusts from loaf of day-old bread. Cutt 4 lengthwise slices about 1/2 inch thick and spread with butter. Place a slice on a platter, spread with mayonnaise, then cover with sliced, peeled tomatoes. Spread another slice with mayonnaise and place it mayonnaise side down on the tomatoes. Spread the top of this slice with the filling of choice, cover with the third slice of bread. Spread it with mayonnaise and cover with lettuce. Press firmly together. Soften cream cheese with milk, beat until fluffy and frost the outside of the loaf. Garnish with parsley. Chill at least 1 hour. Slice crosswise to serve.
Yield: Serves 8
2Fillings can be just one filling of choice or several on different slices. For fillings, combine filling ingredients and spread onto loaf where desired.
