I wouldn’t have wanted to be in on the brainstorming session for this recipe.

Coming up with the dish and ingredients, not a problem. But the best name they could come up with was “Frankfurters in Crust”?

Clam Aspic Salad

I guess the alternatives are all worse.

  • “Pigs in Sleeping Bag”
  • “Crescent Roll Surprise”
  • “I Swear It’s Not Just Hot Dogs”

The biggest challenge of this recipe was what they meant by “mustard pickle relish.” Relish made from mustard pickles? Some obscure mid-century condiment? One of Heinz’s 57 flavors?

mustard-relish

We just mixed regular relish into mustard.

frankfurters

Spread over dough and covered with hot dogs, it looked a bit less scary. Almost normal — as normal as things ever get in my strange, strange kitchen.

baked

The crescent roll dough more or less held together during the baking process, except for one minor break on the side where mustard tried to make a run for it.

Interestingly, the sesame seeds on top made this look a whole lot more professional.

tasting-cutlery

Eating was a little bit confusing. Is it finger food or a sandwich, like a typical hot dog? Since it’s got the fancy “frankfurters in crust” name, is cutlery mandated?

tasting-baked

Buzz thought it was pretty good. I thought it was OK.

The kids… well, one just ate the mustard-pickle bread, one just ate the hot dogs, and the youngest took one bite and decided he’d rather go to bed early.

I have extremely strange kids.

Verdict: Not bad.

From the tasting notes:

Perfect for anybody who likes mustard and relish on their hot dogs. Dough was a little thin but worked ok as a crust. Does go very nicely with a Waldorf Salad (crunchy and sweet to contrast the spicy/salty frankfurter thing).
