Sherry-Almond Chiffon Pie – A Vintage Gelatin Recipe Test

Posted on Feb 6 2013 - 6:21am by RetroRuth

Guess what? It’s pie time here on Mid-Century Menu!

I love pie time. Mostly because most of the pies we make here turn out pretty well.

And they almost never have vegetables in them.

See? Not a vegetable in sight.

This recipe for Sherry Almond Pie was sent to us by Godzilaw for our gelatin contest. You might remember Godzilaw as the one who also sent us the recipe for Ham Mousse Imperial, but we won’t hold that against her because it was nice to get a dessert recipe for once.

With no vegetables.

Tom was excited that didn’t have American Cheese in it.

“Thank god. No flipping cheese. And no veggies.”

“I know, right?”

“So…Is it pie yet?”

“What? No, it’s not pie yet. I just started it.”

“Well, hurry up! I want pie!”

“Is it pie yet?”

“Yes, now it is pie. But we have to take pictures.”

“Can’t we take pictures later? I want pie!”

“Just relax. It’s not going anywhere.”

“It might. You never know with this gelatin stuff.”

“See? It’s fine. And it didn’t even run away or anything.”

“Is that a sad face?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because this tastes almost like it might be something good. But not quite.”

The Verdict: Meh.

From the Tasting Notes:

Overpowering almonds, vague custard flavor. Very light and airy. Not bad and would eat again, but not great by any means.

Thanks for sending us this dessert recipe, Godzilaw!

Aw, I’m so sad – I was hoping this would be surprisingly delicious! Sorry, Tom!
